Sinopsis

Currently, there is heated debate in the media about water use efficiency. In this context, this work contributes scientific and accurate information about the agronomic performance of beans under deficit irrigation. The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of water deficit at different phenological stages of the cowpea cultivars Sempre Verde and Setentao, with the aim of obtaining information on the technical feasibility of using deficit irrigation in this crop. It was found that irrigation deficits and cultivars interacted and affected the production and partitioning of dry matter in the aerial part, harvest index, production components, and productivity, but did not influence the number of pods per plant. Water deficit at the production formation stage (T2) did not influence the production of total dry matter in the aerial part. Deficit irrigation management in cowpea cultivation can result in greater water use efficiency by the crop.
