Sinopsis

Because of its impact on infant morbidity and mortality, as well as its implications for adult health, low birth weight is a major public health problem in the DRC. This study aims to determine the risk factors for low birth weight in Kamina. It is a case-control study nested within a cross-sectional study that included live and non-living births registered at HGR/Kamina from December 2022 to July 2023. Results: Risk factors for low birth weight were unwanted pregnancy (ORa=32.736, IC95%= [3.361-318.829], pa=0.003), hospitalization during pregnancy (ORa=179.877, IC95%= [10.354-10.354], pa=0.00) and passive smoking by the mother during pregnancy (ORa=35.869, IC95%= [2.807-458.398], pa=0.006).This study has therefore shown that, in addition to physiological factors that cannot be modified, certain important factors remain accessible. Well-targeted and coordinated IEC actions on the various modifiable risk factors mentioned above are essential.
