Godfrey of Bulloigne: Or The Recovery of Jerusalem is a historical epic poem written by Torquato Tasso in 1580. The poem is set during the First Crusade and follows the exploits of Godfrey of Bouillon, a French knight who leads the Christian armies in their quest to retake Jerusalem from the Muslim forces. The poem is divided into twenty cantos and is written in ottava rima, a form of poetry consisting of eight-line stanzas. It is considered one of the greatest works of Italian literature and has been translated into many languages. The 1845 edition of the book is a translation by John Hoole and includes an introduction and notes on the historical context of the poem.
